It began, as many Peach Tree mysteries do, with a missing pair of glasses and a suspiciously cheerful elf near the buffet line.
The clue on the bulletin board that morning read: “Butter Dish Bandits Strike Again at Peach Tree’s Holiday Luncheon.” And oh, did they ever. Right as trays of baked ham, green bean almondine, and warm dinner rolls made their grand entrance to the table, Mr. Harold let out a chuckle-turned-groan.
“Well, now I can’t butter my roll or see it,” he said, squinting down at his plate. “Anyone seen my glasses?”
Thus began another chapter in our Holiday Spectacle Hunt, and the lunchroom sprang to life. Residents peered under napkins and behind salt shakers, staff checked coat pockets and chair backs, and someone even lifted the jello mold (again — false alarm).
That’s when Rosa, one of our spirited servers, paused mid-pour of peppermint punch. “Wait,” she whispered, peeking toward the butter tray. Nestled among the golden pats like a crown jewel sat a folded pair of white novelty glasses — slightly glossy from their chilly hiding spot.
And beside the butter dish? A telltale tuft of red felt.
Yes, our Peach Tree Elf had done it again — tiny handprints in the margarine, and all.
The dining room erupted in laughter. Mr. Harold reclaimed his glasses (after a good wipe-down) and gave the elf a mock scolding. “If you want to borrow my glasses, you’d better butter your own roll next time!”
